Strengthen Your Back and Your Golf Game

Golf is a game that, once you learn you can play for the rest of your life. From tiny tots to retirees, everyone loves getting out on the green and swinging a club. Golf is laid-back, enjoyable, and pretty low key. Yet, for being relaxing it sure does produce a lot of injuries!

According to the Golf Channel, many of the leading injuries in golf are related to the back. In fact, the top golf injury is back pain.  And, most golfers, casual or serious, will experience back pain at some point in their life.  Ouch.

So, what’s the deal with all the pain? Sometimes back pain related to golf stems from the fact that the golfer does not know how to properly swing a club. However, most back pain related to golf is actually caused by a weak back.  So, although you may be swinging a club over and over, what you really need to do is get your back in order.

If you want to strengthen your back so you can be the best on the course, then you need to create a well-rounded routine that will build your muscles. If you have access to a gym, this could look like a set of barbell lifts, using the rowing machine, or doing lateral pulls a couple times every day. But, if the gym isn’t really your thing, there are exercises you can do at home as well. Try a few sets of abdominal crunches, hip lifts, and planks to get you started.

The more you are going to golf, the stronger your back needs to be.  Muscles can only take so much abuse before they are bound to break. So, if you really want to be a master of the club you need to be a master in the gym as well!
